Class Description:

World Art Educators Workshop takes place from October 25th to 28th 2007 at the Mashiko Pottery Club, Japan.
Participants will: take part in multiple firings and attend Master Classes for throwing, trimming, decorating and kiln building.
This will be a truly “Japanese Cultural Immersion” experience.
Accommodation on site at the “Potters’ Inn” –traditional Japanese futon/tatami accommodation experiencing a mix of Japanese and western food (some cooked over a sunken charcoal fire).

We have also created a kiln-building workshop at the same location for 5 days in September 2007 during which we will build the Euan Craig 14 hour wood fired kiln and the Kusakabe Masakazu “Susukenei” smokeless 2 day wood fired kiln at the Pottery Club.

We plan to use these two pre-built kilns and also have participants help build the Steve Mills “Back Yard Salt Kiln” and the Wali Hawes’ radical “Flying Kiln” . All four kilns will have pieces from each participant in them.

Firing schedules will be announced later. The kiln teams will be supported by Japanese local staff and potters particularly in the over night sessions.
**Firing team membership is optional for participants-cheer leaders are also welcome –kiln gloves or pompoms will be provided.

Participants may ship or bring bisqued ware for the 4 kiln firings or they may use our prepared bisqued pieces for experimental surface
treatment and kiln inclusion. The four Kiln Masters have also created an enticing menu of organic and safe chemical materials to create innovative surface effects in each of the four firings-check Wali Hawes’ Master Class on surface decoration.

Here is a rough firing schedule for the workshop (the times and day plans may change depending on technical variables and weather conditions):
Thursday October 25th: guests arrive by 7:00pm. Nabe supper. Kusakabe San’s kiln stacking starts in the afternoon and firing starts as soon as stacking is completed. Assuming a midnight start it should be finished by 4:00pm Saturday (40hrs) Firing roster to be worked out later, giving all participants a chance to do a shift without anybody doing any all nighters.

Friday October 26th; Stack Euan Craig kiln quickly in the morning and start firing by lunch time. 14 hours from raw, but if all pots are bisqued that can be shortened considerably. Steve and Wali construct their kilns. Japanese buffet supper.

Saturday October 27th: Fire the Steve and Wali kilns. George Gune supper on site.

Sunday October 28th; Unstack kilns; review results; pack up Potters’ Inn and Workshops. Visit Euan Craig Studio if time permits. Workshop ends at 1:00p.m.

Master Classes for wheel throwing and pot decoration will be interspersed where possible.
Each student will have their own wheel work- station and materials available throughout the workshop.

The Total cost of the Fantastic Fire workshop (which includes presenters fees, workshop rental, materials, accommodation and meals) is 75,000 Japanese yen.
